Garage Bike Storage — Get Your Bikes Off the Floor
Bikes are one of the most awkward things to store in a garage. They’re too big to stack, too valuable to leave on the floor, and there’s never quite enough of them — because one bike leads to two, and two leads to a family’s worth. StoreWALL’s wall-mounted bike storage system gets every bike off the floor and onto the wall, where they’re safe, accessible, and out of the way of the car.
Whether you have one road bike or a garage full of mountain bikes, kids bikes, and e-bikes, we have the hooks, brackets, and panels to sort it out.
Choose Your Bike Storage Method
StoreWALL offers five distinct ways to store a bike on the wall. The right choice depends on how many bikes you have, how much wall space you’re working with, and who needs to access them. Here’s a straight comparison:
J Hook (Perpendicular — front wheel on hook)
The J Hook — also called the Bike Hook — is the most straightforward option. The front wheel slots into the hook and the bike hangs perpendicular to the wall, one wheel touching the floor. It takes up roughly 1m (or the height of the bike) of floor depth but is easy for adults to put on and take off without any lifting. CamLok keeps the hook locked on the panel regardless of how many times you load and unload the bike.
Tip: Best for: 1–2 bikes, adults only, standard garage depth. Also suits road bikes.
Rotating Bike Hook (Perpendicular + swivels flat to wall)
The Rotating Bike Hook is the J Hook with one important upgrade: it rotates. Once your bike is on the hook, you can swing it flat against the wall so the bike runs parallel to the panel rather than sticking out into the garage. This is the most space-efficient single-hook option we sell, and it’s particularly useful in narrower garages or when you need to store multiple bikes side by side. CamLok locks (2 for each bike) the hook at any rotation angle.
Tip: Best for: Multiple bikes, tighter garages, maximising the wall. Our single most popular bike storage product.
SteadyRack Bracket with StoreWALL Plates
The SteadyRack is an Australian-designed bike bracket that pivots — you roll the front wheel in and the bike self-loads onto the bracket at an angle, with no lifting required. StoreWALL has developed a purpose-built backplate set that mounts to your slatwall panels using CamLok, allowing you to install and reposition your SteadyRack brackets anywhere on the wall without drilling into it.
We stock plates for both the SteadyRack Classic and the newer SteadyRack ProFlex (which also supports bikes with mudguards and fenders). If you already own a SteadyRack and were planning to screw it directly to the wall, the StoreWALL plate system gives you that same functionality with the ability to move it later.
Tip: Best for: Families with kids, cyclists who want no-lift loading, anyone already invested in SteadyRack. The ProFlex plates suit bikes with mudguards.
Horizontal Bike Storage — 381mm Bike Brackets
The 381mm bike brackets hang your bike horizontally on the wall — front wheel up, bike lying flat along the panel. This is the cleanest-looking option and is particularly popular in apartments, studios, and garages where aesthetics matter. The brackets have soft felt padding to protect your frame. A standard adult bike hung this way takes up around 1m of wall width and up to 2m of wall height and projects around 40cm (width of your bike pedals) from the wall.
Tip: Best for: Road bikes, stylish setups, limited floor-depth garages. Note: requires more wall width than other methods.
Vertical Hanging — HD Universal Hook or Cradle Hook
The Heavy Duty Universal Hook and the Heavy Duty Cradle Hook can both be used to hang a bike fully vertically — front wheel in the hook, bike hanging straight down. This option takes up the least wall width of any method but requires you to lift the bike high enough to slot the wheel in. The HD Universal Hook is rated to 45kg per hook when panels are installed with InstallStrips. Required wall width is around 1m (height of the bike), required wall height is up to 2m (length of the bike).
Tip: Best for: Adult bikes where floor space matters more than ease of access. Not ideal for kids or heavier e-bikes.
Don’t Forget the Accessories
The advantage of a wall panel system over standalone bike hooks is that you can store everything that goes with the bikes on the same wall. Most customers add at least some of the following alongside their bike hooks:
- Helmet hooks — a small hook at a comfortable height next to each bike keeps helmets off the floor and easy to grab
- Pump hook — a longer hook or cradle holds the floor pump vertically, saving it from being knocked over
- Glove and shoe storage — small bins or baskets at waist height for cycling gloves, shoes, and lights
- Water bottle basket — a small basket keeps filled bottles accessible before a ride
- Kids bike accessories — a lower hook placement plus a small hook for a kids helmet makes the wall functional for younger riders too
Because StoreWALL accessories clip on and off the panel without tools, you can rearrange the whole setup in minutes as your needs change — new bike, new rider, different season.
How Many Panels Do You Need?
A good rule of thumb for a bike wall:
- 1 bike with a J Hook or Rotating Hook: 1 x 1.2m Standard Duty panel is usually enough
- 2–3 bikes with Rotating Hooks: 2 x 1.2m panels side by side, or 1 x 2.4m panel
- 4 or more bikes: 2–3 x 2.4m panels depending on bike size and chosen storage method
- Full family wall (bikes + helmets + pumps + accessories): plan for 2 x 2.4m panels minimum

Which Panel Should You Use for Bike Storage?
For bike storage, we recommend Standard Duty or Heavy Duty panels installed with InstallStrips. You might also want to look at the new MKE Slatwall range.
Here’s why: the InstallStrip system spreads the load of the hook across multiple fixing points rather than concentrating it at a single screw. For heavier bikes — particularly e-bikes — this makes a real difference to the security of the installation.
Standard Duty panels with InstallStrips are the most popular choice and handle all bike hooks in the StoreWALL range, including the SteadyRack brackets. Heavy Duty panels are worth considering if you’re also storing heavy tools or equipment on the same wall.
The new MKE Slatwall range has comparable weight capacity to the Heavy Duty panels and so can handle all bike types.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I use StoreWALL bike hooks on my existing slatwall panels?
If you have a standard PVC slatwall panel with 76mm groove spacing — StoreWALL bike hooks are compatible and CamLok will engage correctly. If you’re unsure about your panel type, contact us before ordering.
Will the hooks scratch my bike tyres or rims?
No. The J Hook and Rotating Bike Hook both have a soft coating on the contact surfaces. The 381mm Bike Brackets have felt padding that protects the frame. The SteadyRack brackets support the tyre, not the frame.
Are the bike hooks suitable for e-bikes?
Yes, with the right setup. E-bikes are heavier — typically 20–30kg — so we recommend Heavy Duty panels installed with InstallStrips, and the HD Universal Hook or SteadyRack ProFlex brackets for the most secure hold. You might also wish to consider having the lower tyre rest on the ground.
Can kids use the hooks independently?
The J Hook and Rotating Bike Hook both require the rider to lift the front wheel up to the hook height, which can be challenging for younger children. The SteadyRack is the easiest option for kids as it uses a roll-in design with no lifting. Alternatively, a lower hook placement with the J Hook can work for older kids who can manage a small lift.
Do I need a full StoreWALL panel system or can I use individual hooks?
You need a panel to use StoreWALL hooks — the CamLok mechanism requires a slatwall groove to engage with. If you don’t have panels yet, the most common starting point for a bike wall is a 1.2m or 2.4m Standard Duty panel kit which comes with the panels, InstallStrips, and all hardware needed for installation.
